This collection of sixteen clever puzzle pictures offers lots of practice in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. For the earlier puzzles, all the numbers are whole numbers. After that they include fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios. It offers a visual and imaginative approach to getting more practice and is called 'Arithmetic Arithmetic...' because there are two different sets of sums for each of the pictures. Choose the easier set, the harder set or if you wish, both!

This ingenious game provides eleven sets of number cards which allow just that. Cross-numbers are the mathematical equivalents of crossword puzzles. The earlier puzzles in the book only require simple arithmetic and basic knowledge,. but, as the sequence continues, so the level of difficulty increases. The later ones also demand some enjoyable logical reasoning to tease out the solutions. For the final puzzles, access to a calculator would be helpful and some would say essential! Anyone who enjoys arithmetic and likes to search for patterns and relationships between numbers will find much to please them in this book.

MathMagic Number Game

This game is a fine way to practise mental arithmetic. It is played on a squared board with plastic tiles, each of which has four numbers on it. Colours have to be placed next to one of those that is already there and the numbers have to be added, subtracted, multiplied or divided. Points are scored according to the result of the calculation. It can be played as a form of solitaire but is better treated as a game for 2-4 players. Deciding which is the best tile to play next in a competitive social context stimulates more mental arithmetic so helping to improve numerical agility. £14.50 (+VAT)

20 Piece Jigsaw

For this puzzle from SMILE a tables square has been cut into twenty irregular pieces along the edges of the squares. The task is to fit them together to make the original square as quickly as possible. The pieces are pleasant to handle and this puzzle offers a pleasing approach to learning and recognising the sequences of multiples and multiplication tables. £3.20 (+VAT)

Hundred Fit - SMILE

This is an ingenious double-sided puzzle where sets of numbers from 1 to 100 have been arranged on both sides of a 10 x 10 square according to two different unknown rules. The square was then cut up into a number of jigsaw pieces. The puzzle is to fit the pieces together and so discover these rules. Trial and error is the only way to start but logical thinking soon takes over and step by step leads to a rewarding conclusion. £3.20 (+VAT)

My Tables Box

All the tables are here, each on a separate card which has the sum on the front and the answer on the back There are cards for each possible combination for multiplication and division and the learner mixes them into random order and works through the pile, putting aside those which are not answered correctly for a further attempt. Even the process of sorting the cards systematically back into the compartments of the box-tray will be a useful activity for those who need to improve their understanding of numerical order.

My Maths Box

A collection of self-correcting cards with the questions on the front and the answers on the back. Some cards deal with definitions, but most give straightforward sums to practise. The sums are easy but the emphasis is on understanding and there is considerable variety in the way the questions are posed. The topics covered include money, telling the time from clock faces and digital watches, simple fractions, spelling, metric and Imperial units and the names of geometrical shapes. The cards can be presented topic by topic or of course used as a revision and diagnostic tool. A very thoroughly worked out scheme.

Becoming quick and accurate at the multiplication tables is a very useful skill. Use these ingenious cubes to practise all the tables in a different and active way.
