Measuring and Estimating

Dime Practicals Pack

96 practical experiments in estimating and measuring. Geoff Giles
This collection is an attempt to overcome the problem of bringing a very wide variety of different objects into the classroom for some realistic practice in measuring and estimating. Each of the 96 familiar and easily recognised objects, is sealed into a clear plastic envelope, together with a question card. Since the object can be seen through the plastic, but not touched or removed, a variety of different estimating methods are required. The set of 96 items is divided into four groups of 24, stored in separate boxes called A, B, C & D. The cards are numbered and colour coded, making it easier to keep track of everything. There are extensive teacher's notes about estimating and a list of the actual measurements and answers to the questions. It is practical in all senses and a valuable addition to classroom resources.

Area and Perimeter

Poster
The essential message of this brightly coloured poster is that the area of a shape and its perimeter should not be confused. It emphasises that a fixed area can have very different perimeters and a fixed perimeter can enclose very different areas. When teaching this important part of the mathematics curriculum, this poster offers useful support.

This book is a collection of ingenious activities to encourage and reinforce the related concepts of measuring and estimating. There are some teacher's notes, but the book mainly takes the form of a series of worksheets and photocopy masters of a collection of shapes. Children develop good estimation skills only by practice and experience and the great strength of this collection lies in its careful progression and the good ideas. Being an American book, there are more activities using inches than is nowadays appropriate here, but its main value lies in the treatment and the approach. Everything can easily be adapted to suit present classroom needs.
