A Handbook of Paper Automata Mechanisms
1 899618 58 9
Walter Ruffler

This wonderful book by an imaginative designer of automata models shows in a step by step way how to obtain a large number of different kinds of movement using thickish paper as the modelling material. In a clear and well illustrated way it explains how to make use of the properties of levers, drive shafts, gears and cams to obtain smooth, jerky or repetitive motions of different kinds. Also included are five working models to cut out and glue together, which between them demonstrate many of the basic techniques in physical form. If you want to design any kind of moving model, then this is the book for you. £6.95

Pop-up!
A manual of paper mechanisms
1 899618 09 0
Duncan Birmingham

There is a growing interest in the field of paper mechanics and this manual explains how they work and provides clear instructions for creating everything from the most elementary pop-up card to highly sophisticated fold-away paper sculptures. The basic principles are simple and the book introduces these. It then shows how they can be developed and combined to produce a kaleidoscope of 3D possibilities. Duncan Birmingham lectures at the University of the West of England and this book is a distillation of his practical experience. It explains the factors which have to be considered when designing, as well as solutions to potential pitfalls. There are masses of ideas for interesting projects, all illustrated with lively and informative drawings. £6.95

Paper Engineering
For pop-up books and cards

Mark Hiner

This book illustrates in dynamic form ten basic mechanisms which are used in making pop-up books. It offers many imaginative possibilities. Each of the ten basic mechanisms is illustrated by a working model which you can cut out and make. When finished, it glues back into the book on a special tab and folds away to make a kind of three-dimensional dictionary or encyclopaedia. For each working model there is also a page called 'technical considerations' which points out important features of the mechanism and suggests how it might be used to create original designs of your own. £5.95

Up-Pops
Paper engineering with elastic bands
0 906212 79 0
Mark Hiner

The ten basic paper engineering mechanisms shown in this book have an almost explosive quality. Each 'up-pop' folds flat, but when it is eased out of its envelope or restraining sleeve, it suddenly and unexpectedly jumps into a three-dimensional shape. This element of surprise is most attractive and suggests all kinds of imaginative designs. The motive power for each mechanism is provided by a single elastic band. With each example there are useful notes about the mechanisms and suggestions for further development of the ideas to create original designs. £5.95

Paper Flying Machines
Elastic powered models to cut out and glue together
0 906212 93 6
John Andrews

In this book there are three different kinds of flying machine to make. A 'monoplane' which has its propeller at the front, a 'flying wing' with a propeller at the back and a 'helicopter' with propellers top and bottom. Although the models are mostly made from the paper cut from the book, they do require a few other items as well: elastic bands, matchsticks, press-studs and paperclips. It is fascinating to use paper and such simple items to make machines that really do fly. Included is an extensive minibook where John Andrews explains about flight in general and these models in particular, a most interesting combination. £4.95

Paper Gliders
To cut out, make and fly
1 899618 54 6
Trevor Bounford

There are hours of fun to be had in making and flying these colourful and ingenious gliders. The special designs are ready to cut out, glue together and then practise your aeronautical skills. Printed on paper of just the right weight for the purpose they can be flown either indoors or in sheltered places outdoors. £4.95 (inc. VAT)
