Each of the globemodels is cut from strong card and they are suitable for children of 8/9 upwards to make. The folds are at 30° intervals of both latitude and longitude and the distortion which is introduced by smoothing off the curvature is not significant. For each model there is a stand which has a useful drawer in which to keep the experimental material and the minibook.

The Tarquin Globe
To cut out and make yourself
0 906212 55 3
Jenkins & Bear

This new edition of the Globe is bang up to date and includes all the recent changes in countries and their borders. All the countries are shown in full colour and there are about 1200 major cities, seas, rivers and other geographical features. There is also a 24 page minibook called 'Do you know?' which is full of interesting facts and ideas about the Earth and the environment. The minibook also explains how to use the experimental cut-outs which are provided and which help to make it easy to understand ideas which would otherwise be rather difficult. For instance the 'Time Collar' shows how to find the time anywhere in the world and the cut-out 'Full Moon' allows a better appreciation of the scale of the Sun, Earth, Moon system. There are many more ideas also which are introduced by using the model as a starting point. £4.95

The Tarquin Star-Globe
To cut out and make yourself
0 906212 60 X
Jenkins & Bear

The Star-Globe shows the whole celestial sphere and it is an ingenious three-dimensional star chart which works at any latitude for any time and date. The Star-Globe itself rests in a simple cradle which shows the horizon. This means that you know which way to look to find and identify the stars, constellations and planets. Because it works for any latitude, it can be used to demonstrate facts about the universe and the night sky which are otherwise very difficult to explain and understand. There is a minibook which is full of ideas and background information. £4.95

Days, Months & Years
A perpetual calendar for the past, present and future
0 906212 71 5
Magdalen Bear

This year, next year, sometime, ever! Whatever the date, this book gives the calendar for that year. Looking back into the past, you can use it to find out on what day of the week any event took place, or on what day anyone was born. It deals with Leap Years and also the special changes of 1752. In that year, the day following Wednesday September 2nd was Thursday September 14th. Also for the first time the year began on January 1st. Apart from the yearly calendars, this book also tells the interesting story about how our calendar has evolved into its present form. £3.99

The Sun, Moon & Tides
A collection of working models to cut out and glue together
0 906212 76 6
Jenkins & Bear

One of the models tells the time from the Sun during the day and the Moon at night. Another mimics the motion of both the Sun and Moon across the sky on any day of the year, demonstrating clearly why the days are longer in summer and shorter in winter. The moon globe names all the seas, craters and Apollo landing sites and makes it clear why part of the Moon's surface can never be seen from Earth. Included also is a minibook packed with information and explanations about the relationship between the Sun, the Moon and the Tides. £4.95

Sundials & Timedials

0 906212 59 6
Jenkins & Bear

There is no doubt that the best way to understand the principles of sundials and timedials is to make working models. Each of the models is cut from thin card and is adjustable for use within the range of latitudes 30°N-60°N. They work surprisingly accurately and there are many different designs: Polar, Equatorial, Sunbeam Equatorial, Traditional, Three in One, Suntracker, Solar Compass, Time Cylinder and Nocturnal. Also included is a minibook which gives plenty of ideas and background information which can suggest some interesting projects and investigations.
