Curve Stitching
The art of sewing beautiful mathematical patterns
0 906212 65 0
Jon Millington

Curve stitching is a creative, practical activity with a strong mathematical background. This book explains the technique and there are large colour photographs of a good selection of beautiful designs, with 'stitch-by-stitch' sewing plans. The different families of designs are put into their mathematical context and there are many suggestions for further development. There is also a good collection of computer programs written in Basic. These programs can readily be modified and adapted so that one can find on screen those patterns which will be most pleasing to sew. £7.50

Mathematical Window Patterns
1 899618 31 7 William Gibbs

This book is a splendid collection of beautiful patterns which can be created by arranging regular shapes, usually rectangles so that they overlap in a symmetrical way. When the finished design is placed on a window, the light shines through one, two, three or more layers and the underlying structure is revealed. These patterns are specially attractive if made from tinted paper. Full descriptions and plans are included. £4.95

Jon Millington

If you take five squares of the same size and join them edge to edge, the resulting shape is called a Pentomino. There are 12 different pentominoes and the number of patterns you can make with them is very large. This book shows some of the possibilities, poses some problems and suggests fruitful lines of investigation. Complete with sets of pentominoes in two colours to cut out and an envelope in which to keep them. £3.95
