Build-Up Project Pack
DIME investigation Geoff Giles

This major development is based on practical activity in a problem-solving setting by asking children to build solids shown in isometric 'picture views'. Each child works with some brightly coloured DIME solids through a series of booklets. Very few words are used, making this material especially suitable for poor readers. The nature of each task is self-evident and with the solid shapes to hand, they can easily see when they are right. The later booklets provide problems that most children will find testing, but by working in sequence, spatial skills are gradually improved. The pack includes all the material needed for four or five children

TakTiles
DIME shape recognition Geoff Giles

Shape recognition is an important part of early education and the TakTiles project sets out to provide some interesting and stimulating material for children to use. Eight different curvy shapes made out of colourful Plastazote can fit together in many ways and the activity centres around the task of filling a variety of different outlines with two or more of them. There are teacher's notes presented both in booklet form with comments and also as an A2 chart. This chart can be used to introduce the materials to a class or to a group. However, the main thrust of the work is for individual activity and discovery. The pack contains enough material for a group of five children.

DIME Solids

This set consists of a storage box filled with 36 large colourful blocks in seven different shapes, cut from sturdy but soft Plastazote. This durable and colourful plastic material has a very attractive 'feel' which makes it very suitable for classroom activities. For very young children, these solids are very suitable for 'free-play' building, but their main purpose is to be used for the 'Build-Up' and '3-D Sketching' activities
Price per box
£12.50 (+ VAT)

DIME Cubes

This set consists of 96 single cubes packed into a convenient storage box. They are the same size as the single cubes included in the DIME Solids set and are made of the same material. They can be used to extend the DIME Build-up work or are a useful resource in their own right. £8.50 (+ VAT)

Dime Puzzle Packs

Young children love to take apart these colourful 'jig-saw' type shapes and then to reassemble them. Each of them fits together so satisfyingly. Some of the joins are symmetrical and some are not and they provide valuable practice in 'seeing' shapes and recognising how and where the piece in question fits.

Tricube Puzzle Project
DIME Projects Geoff Giles

Tricubes are L-shaped pieces made from three cubes joined together and make a fine introduction to three-dimensional solids. It is explained how these solids can be represented as full-size plans, coded plans and isometric views and the puzzles test this knowledge and understanding. The project consists of a set of tricubes and a 48 page book of blackline masters.

Pre-Algebra Project Pack
DIME Algebra Geoff Giles

The orthodox approach to early algebra centres on teaching children what to do in particular situations. While much may be said about 'why' something is done, many children only actually learn 'how' to do it. The approach in this DIME pack focuses on building up in children a dynamic way of thinking. Simple situations are presented, and thinking about the diagrams develops naturally into the use of algebraic notation.
The material consists of seven booklets, with the concepts divided into three main areas of understanding. The first two, 'Number Mappings' and 'Operations' show ways of looking at numerical operations. The focus of attention is on how the operations relate to each other rather than on the calculations which are required. The third area is called 'Number Patterns' and each of the patterns derives naturally from a series of developing diagrams. The task is to find a generalisation expressed in terms of simple algebra which fits both the diagrams and the tables of results.

Algebra Through Geometry
DIME Geoff Giles

Many teachers will find this approach to teaching algebra a valuable and ingenious one. Instead of using something like 'apples' and 'pears' in the initial stages of talking about the symbols 'a' and 'b' or 'x' and 'y', it uses differently shaped geometrical areas. These areas can be combined and subtracted as appropriate to produce interesting diagrams of different shapes and areas, illustrating in concrete form the algebraic expressions. Based on the shapes used for TakTiles and accompanied by four panels, this 32 page booklet of teacher's notes and blackline masters breaks new ground in a most valuable way.
