For pop-up books and cards

Mark Hiner
This book illustrates in dynamic form ten basic mechanisms which are used in making pop-up books. It offers many imaginative possibilities. Each of the ten basic mechanisms is illustrated by a working model which you can cut out and make. When finished, it glues back into the book on a special tab and folds away to make a kind of three-dimensional dictionary or encyclopaedia. For each working model there is also a page called 'technical considerations' which points out important features of the mechanism and suggests how it might be used to create original designs of your own.

Up-Pops

Paper engineering with elastic bands

Mark Hiner
The ten basic paper engineering mechanisms shown in this book have an almost explosive quality. Each 'up-pop' folds flat, but when it is eased out of its envelope or restraining sleeve, it suddenly and unexpectedly jumps into a three-dimensional shape. This element of surprise is most attractive and suggests all kinds of imaginative designs. The motive power for each mechanism is provided by a single elastic band. With each example there are useful notes about the mechanisms and suggestions for further development of the ideas to create original designs.

Duncan Birmingham
There is a growing interest in the field of paper mechanics and this manual explains how they work and provides clear instructions for creating everything from the most elementary pop-up card to highly sophisticated fold-away paper sculptures. The basic principles are simple and the book introduces these. It then shows how they can be developed and combined to produce a kaleidoscope of 3D possibilities. Duncan Birmingham lectures at the University of the West of England and this book is a distillation of his practical experience. It explains the factors which have to be considered when designing, as well as solutions to potential pitfalls. There are masses of ideas for interesting projects, all illustrated with lively and informative drawings.
